What gives matter its inner life?
ALMA names the quieter philosophical position within my practice. The word carries associations with soul, nourishment and alma mater—a place of learning and formation—while containing MA: Mark, mother, matter, material, making and Master of Arts. Its visual ambiguity also allows AI/MA to appear, acknowledging an evolving conversation between human and artificial forms of recognition, selection and authorship..
ALMA reflects a preference for facilitation rather than control. Across making, teaching, parenting and collaboration, I am interested in creating conditions through which another person, material or image can develop without being entirely directed or possessed. Authorship becomes distributed: matter carries memory, processes generate unforeseen forms, and meaning emerges through attention, negotiation and care.

AI/MA does not describe the replacement of human authorship, but a space in which authority is continually reassessed. Pattern recognition, accumulation and recombination are already embedded within my own processes. Working in conversation with AI makes those structures more visible, raising questions about where intention resides, how selections acquire authority, and whether authorship can remain shared, provisional and transparent.
